Materials available to borrow

Wisconsin Department of Transportation staff and sponsored researchers may borrow materials directly from the WisDOT Library or through WisDOT’s membership in the OCLC Interlibrary Loan network. This network includes university, large public and corporate libraries, museums and archival repositories. Items available to borrow include books, CDs, DVDs, reports, videos and journal articles, and many can be obtained at little or no cost. Search the contents of WisDOT’s library using our shared catalog, WISCAT.

The library can also access other materials, such as standards and specifications, multi-disciplinary journal articles, conference and proceeding papers and other technical research through our membership in regional and national transportation knowledge networks.

How to borrow an item

If you would like to borrow an item, please email and provide as much information about the item as possible (i.e. book or journal article title, author, year published, ISBN, etc.) If you found the item in WISCAT, simply forward the record to us at

The loan period for items borrowed from the WisDOT Library or through the Interlibrary Loan network is typically one month. If the item you need is already on loan, contact the library to place the item on hold.

Where to research online

  • TRID database
Currently the largest transportation-specific informational database that combines the records from the Transportation Research Board’s Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) Database and the OECD’s Joint Transport Research Centre’s International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) Database. TRID provides access to over 900,000 records of transportation research worldwide.  TRID is especially useful in that it enables researchers to find unique items such as individual journal articles, conference and proceeding papers and many full-text technical research reports.
  • WorldCat
The world’s largest and most comprehensive catalog containing the library records of over 25,000 member libraries, archives and museums.  There are over 235 million records in the WorldCat database.  The WisDOT Library is able to borrow from just about any member library or organization at little or no cost.
